We are expecting some below zero highs in a few days. Today we spent the day getting ready for it. We will find out in a few days if the plans were sufficient.
We were planning to put the calves that we weaned back in the pasture today. With the cold snap we've made the decision to leave them in the barn for a few more days. It means that our pregnant mares and other horses will not have a barn to come into, but we feel natures wind blocks, plenty of hay and water will get them through. The horses have yet to come in this winter and have a healthy thick coat of winter hair.
Hancock Silver Tonka and Dixie will remain in their pasture which has a run-in for them to get into.
We are planning on taking an extra round bale out to the pasture for the beef cows tomorrow. We figure the tractor will not start in the below zero temperatures and this well ensure that the cattle have plenty of food. There is a spring that runs year round for water, with some luck that will not freeze. We will need to check on that to be sure. We are also planning to get some bedding down for them to be able to lay on.
We will spend the day tomorrow getting the final work done. Will it be enough? Only time will tell, but I do know one thing for certain. It seems that no matter how prepared we think we are, there is always the unexpected that happens.
