Well, it's been a month since I've posted anything, I think we are finally healthy again. Today was the first day we were above 40 degrees in quite some time. It was nice to see some of the snow melting today since the snowbanks are getting pretty high around here. I took a mother-daughter trip to Texas with my mom in January. We ended up spending most of our time at the Fort Worth Stock Show. It happened to be during the cold spell that extended down there as well. But at least we were able to get 2 days of temperatures above 50. Sometimes that's all it takes to make the winter here more bearable.
Our hay supply is starting to dwindle. We are hoping for some more warm days and more snow melt so the animals can get at last year's grass and reduce the amount of hay needed. Last year my dad handled the mowing, raking & baling in exchange for a portion of the hay. This year we are hoping to have our own equipment so we can keep the entire crop.
We haven't ridden since early December and are more than ready to get on the horses again. It seems like between cold and bad roads we just haven't been able to get to an indoor arena to do any riding. I can't remember the last time I went this long without working with the horses. The round pen is full of snow and I'm thinking it's a good opportunity to work with the young horses. Some people like to start them in nice deep sand, I'll settle for making use of the deep snow. With the days getting longer I'm hoping to get out there in the next week or so.
I'm getting more excited for our first foal crop out of Tonka. The mares are all healthy and we are about 2 months away from our first foal of the year. We are also 2 months away from calving season. We will go from moving snow and feeding hay to monitoring the animals and making sure they remain healthy and deliver healthy babies. We are hoping to get more fencing done this spring so we can put those close to foaling/calving into pastures that are close to the house. We also want to get a bigger pasture fenced for Tonka & Dixie.
As you can see, there is a lot to look forward to with the arrival of spring. It just can't seem to get here soon enough for me...
