We're expanding the beef herd! We doubled the size of our herd and are gearing up for twice as many calves. We've been purchasing round bales to get us through what has been a pretty mild winter and making sure all the new cows are settling in well. Hopefully the mild winter continues, but I'm not going to hold my breath. The calves will start coming in March and that is a little earlier than we prefer since we don't have a good set up to get them into a barn or somewhere warm. I figure that is when we will get the cold and snow that we haven't had yet.
The horses are all doing well and the babies from last year are growing up way too fast. The cuts and bites that Jet sustained last fall are healing up nicely. He's running with the others (sometimes ahead of them) and on the mend. Time will tell if he will be completely sound on that hind leg that had the most severe damage. At this time we are happy to see him moving and keeping pace with all the others, even if there is a bit of a limp.
We've managed a few trips to our good friends indoor arena to do a little riding this winter. With my one hour commute each way for work it is not possible to go during the week . Between buying cattle & hay, doing chores and spending time with family it has been tough to find the time to get over there to ride. The 5 year old mare and 4 year old gelding have now been ridden in their first indoor arena. We've introduced them to the rope and are working on improving their turns and overall speed control. We are really pleased with how they are coming along and look forward to what the next spring and summer will bring us. I'm hoping to get the 4 year old mare over to the arena on our next trip. We had Tonka tested for the 5-panel genetic disease panel and everything came back negative so we are pretty excited about that.
I hope your new year is off to a good start, I know I look forward to what 2015 has in store for us.
